A strange morning (15 September) here in NW Suffolk. Awoke to find a change in routine the evening before had made me forget to put on the garden mothtrap, so took a walk through the village later on by way of compensation. Within a few minutes had spotted a Humming-bird Hawkmoth, then just a few minutes later turned up a superb Dewick's Plusia resting on a fence. Who knows what might have been in the trap if I'd actually switched it on!

A second Deaths Head Hawk Moth caterpillar was found on Woody Nightshade last week a few miles from where the first was found on an allotment in Somerset last month. This one was probably third instar and most likely from a different source to the first. See [www.somersetmothgroup.org.uk] for picture and more details.

Night of 13th September. 3 Dark Sword Grass and generally 1-3 each night the last week. Otherwise migrant count now declining, with no real prospect of anything interesting for at least a week
