National Migrant Dragonfly Update

Unlike the case with Lepidoptera, migrant dragonflies have been rather scarce during June, with just two records of Red-veined Darter (Cley, Norfolk, on 3 June and Sandwich Bay, Kent, on 16 June) plus two reports of Lesser Emperor (Stover, Devon, on 9 June and Tundry Pond, Hampshire, on 13 June). Hopefully the coming warm spell might change this.

On the near Continent, Willow Emerald Damselfly is now starting to emerge. Who will be the first to find the species in Britain this year, following last year's dramatic records?

Three more Rannoch Loopers last night.

One Hummingbird Hawk-moth observed nectaring on Red Clover, earlier this afternoon- 20/06/2010- at Hirwaun, Glamorgan (SN90).

Two more Rannoch Loopers here last night. Tim Peet in Guernsey had two on Saturday, as did Roger Long in Jersey. Three Clouded Yellows in Alderney in past week together with plenty of Painted Ladies & a few Humming-bird Hawks.

Nine more Rannoch Loopers last night in local woods, virtually nothing else, cold and windy! None in garden.

Four more Rannoch Loopers last night - this time in a battery-powered 22W actinic trap in a small nature reserve on west coast of island. Mark Lawlor had two more in his Robinson 125W at north of island.
