Just back from 2+ weeks on Scilly - moths not as good as previous years, but migrant summary as follows;
St Agnes (2 traps + ivy) - 10-20/10/09; 464 Diamond-back 2 1395 Rusty Dot Pearl 491 1398 Rush veneer 123 1590 Red Admiral 17 1591 Painted Lady 2 1720 Gem 1 2091 Dark Sword-grass 17 2119 Pearly Underwing 1 2195 Delicate 9 2202 L-album Wainscot 11 2203 White-speck 37 2441 Silver Y 5 St Marys (1 trap + ivy)21-25/10/09; 1395 Rusty Dot Pearl 158 1398 Rush Veneer 10 1720 Gem 1 2091 Dark Sword-grass 4 2119 Pearly Underwing 2 2195 Delicate 1 2202 L-album Wainscot 5 2203 White-speck 45 2400 Scarce Bordered Straw 1 2441 Silver Y 4 The Red Admiral and Painted Lady records were all trapped at night. Other trappers on St Agnes caught Palpita vitrealis, Gems, Four-spotted Footman, Scarce Bordered Straw etc. in addition to the above records. 9 nights in 2008 with 2 traps on St Agnes yielded only 23 Rush Veneer,but 8 Vestal, 37 Gems and 195 White-specks and several rarer species. It's interesting to speculate which of our south coast 'migrants' are true migrants or transient residents or permanent residents. 37 Gems and 195 White-specks possibly showed residency in 2008, but lower figures in 2009 show the effects of a cold winter? |
