2 Clouded Yellow
My first Painted Ladies of the year arrived in my garden on 2 August. They selected a dark-blossomed Buddleia bush and were extremely aggressive to any passing butterfly, bird or human, chasing them away from their nectar source.
Next day, there were only two but, in the days since, they seem to have calmed down. They are less aggressive, even allowing other species onto the flowers. They still prefer the same bush, despite other nectar-sources nearby. Also on the 2 August, my first Humming-Bird Hawk moth of the year, though this did not linger. On the 4th of August, a veritable swarm of at least 12 Migrant Hawkers buzzed around the garden. These reduced in number over the next few days. As the number of Silver-Y moths has recently increased, I assume all this represents a northward movement of a range of species, associated with the recent hot weather. |
