Further to my earlier posting; perspectalis is not a sexually dimorphic species and the photo I posted is of the apparently much scarcer brown form. Shame as I hoped it was the female and I could breed it!

Hummingbird Hawk-moth within the visitor centre today - released and flew away

Vestal found on a public footpath in Weston-super-Mare VC6 this afternoon.

Night of 27th July. I imagine this is the female of Diaphania perspectalis - Boxworm moth. (if the picture works!) A few migrants around - noctuella, ferrugalis, dark swordgrass silver y and quadra, but I suspect this is an import although I haven't seen any recent box hedging going on!

Night of 27 July: 23 Diamond-back Moth, 5 European Corn-borer, 5 Dark Sword-grass, 1 Silver Barred and 34 Silver Y.

Night of 27 July, Dark Sword-grass 2, Silver Y 24, Diamond-back 23. Also larger than normal numbers of Willow Ermine 20 and Bird Cherry Ermine 6.

27/7 Daytime - many Silver Y plus final instar caterpillar, several Red Admiral including mid instar caterpillar, lots of Whites including Small Whites which seem to have been scarce until now, migrants?. Also 5 Dolicharthria punctalis disturbed from cliff tops

1 Vestal disturbed by day in the yard of Henfryn Farm.

Mocha caught last night.

Night of 26 July: Group trapping session with J.E. Chainey, J. Spence, P.E. Bryant and myself. c240 species recorded; migrants/wanderers as follows: 1+ Bird-cherry Ermine, 20 Willow Ermine, 20 Diamond-back Moth, 1 Peach Twig Borer (first for Suffolk), 1 Elegia similella, 10 European Corn-borer, 1 Convolvulus Hawk-moth, 2 Dark Sword-grass and 30 Silver Y.

Another Elegia similella was recorded in nearby Hollesley on 24 July by R. Watson. These are the first peninsula records.
