Looking at Diamond-back numbers in this arrival - I have trapped with an average of 7 traps per night for the last 9 nights and feel that numbers when I first arrived in the Hebrides were still increasing. My nightly counts in traps are as shown below (and excluding huge numbers seen by day at every footfall on 9th & 10th!):
6th June = 54 7th June = 11 (maybe habitat less suitable in scrub woodland?) 8th June = 5 (cold night) 9th June = 815 10th June = 465 11th June = 290 12th June = 93 13th June = 74 14th June = 56 Since 10th June there has been a noticeable reduction in numbers seen by day and moths have looked increasingly worn. The only other migrant moth seen was 1 Silver Y on 11/6, though others have reported Painted Ladies here. The peak up here was definitely later than further south in England. Our peak was when you were reporting declines. Trapping was in N Skye on 6/6 and all other nights on Harris & Lewis. Numbers trapped on 7th & 8th were maybe not representative of the true numbers across the island, but I feel for all other nights they were. |
